Golden Pompano Market Update

Strong Prices, Steady Harvest, and Active Southeast Asia Demand
As we move into the peak harvest window of Q4 2026, the Chinese golden pompano market is showing clear signs of a strong season: firm farm-gate prices, scalable supply from major farming regions, and sustained export momentum toward Southeast Asia.
1. Market Snapshot
- Price trend: High and stable. Farm-gate prices are running well above last year.
- Main harvest regions: Hainan (Lingshui), Guangdong (Zhanjiang), Fujian (Dongshan), Guangxi (Beibu Gulf).
- Key export destinations: Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, plus growing demand from North America and the Middle East.
- Product flow: Harvest → ice-chilled transport → deep-processing→ IQF/block frozen → reefer export.
In early October, Lingshui, Hainan alone brought in its first major harvest of around 100,000 jin (≈50 metric tons) of golden pompano, with daily output expected to reach 80,000–100,000 jin as more cages are pulled. The fish are shipped by cold chain to Zhanjiang for standardized cleaning, portioning, and packing before export.

3. Why Prices Are Holding High
1. Later harvest, controlled selling
This year’s large-size fish matured later than usual. Farmers are harvesting at target sizes instead of holding stock, which reduces disease risk and keeps supply disciplined.
2. Better export realization
Stronger ASEAN demand and mature processing in Zhanjiang are giving farmers better realized prices than domestic-only sales.
3. Quality-driven premium
Buyers are paying for consistency: uniform sizing, clean appearance, stable cold chain, and proper documentation (HACCP, ISO, health cert, CO/Form E).
4. Export & Supply Chain Observations
- Southeast Asia is the anchor market. Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines are taking both whole-round and value-added cuts.
- Zhanjiang remains the processing hub. Hainan-origin fish often route through Guangdong for deep processing before export.
-
Standard export specs are maturing:
- Whole round (WR)
- Gutted (GUT)
- Head-off/gutted (HGT)
- IQF or BQF
- Custom glazing and private-label packing
- Compliance matters more than ever. Importers increasingly ask for traceability, lot records, cold-chain temperature logs, and residue testing.
5. What This Means for Buyers
Near-term outlook
Prices are likely to stay firm through late October and November. Supply is sufficient, but not oversupplied—farmers are not rushing to dump volume.
Buying recommendations
- Lock sizes early. The 300–500g band moves fast during peak harvest.
- Confirm specs clearly. Define size range, glaze %, packing, and presentation (WR/GUT/IQF) before quoting.
- Plan documents in advance. For ASEAN shipments, prepare Form E / CO; for US/Canada, confirm FDA registration and certification requirements.
- Build buffer for weather. Monsoon and rough-sea periods can delay landings and reefer scheduling.
6. Weather Risk: Super Typhoon "Champi" Approaching Fujian
A new variable has entered the market this week.
Typhoon Champi (蔷琵), the 30th named storm of 2026, is currently a super typhoon (Category 16) and is moving toward the northwest. It entered Fujian's typhoon warning zone on October 22. The system is expected to weaken gradually, with a likely turn toward the northeast near Taiwan and the East China Sea around Oct 24 — but the exact track remains uncertain, and Fujian's coast is already under a Level-IV emergency response.
Immediate impact on supply
- Fishing fleets recalled: All offshore vessels in Fujian were ordered back to port by 10:00 AM, Oct 21; crew evacuated from fishing boats by Oct 22 morning.
- Cage farming paused: Labor on coastal and deep-sea aquaculture rafts — including golden pompano net pens — has been pulled ashore ahead of the storm.
- Sea conditions deteriorating: Coastal Fujian is seeing 8–12级 winds, with wave heights of 2.0–5.0 meters in different zones through Oct 23–26.
- Harvest window narrowed: Dongshan (东山) and other Fujian producing areas will likely see a 3–5 day disruption in fresh landings and raft operations.
What this means for Fujian-origin pricing
Fujian Dongshan was already the highest-quoted region in our last snapshot at 20.07 RMB/jin (+3.6% week-on-week). With Champi disrupting the harvest:
- Short-term upward pressure: Less fresh supply + delayed landings usually pushes local farm-gate quotes higher during the storm window.
- Specification volatility: Fish that can't be harvested on schedule may grow past target sizes or face stress-related quality issues post-storm.
- Logistics buffer needed: Cold-chain trucking, port loading, and Zhanjiang processing handoffs may slip by several days.
⚠️ We are not forecasting a specific price spike — the magnitude depends on whether Champi makes landfall or stays offshore. But buyers should expect firmer Fujian quotes and tighter availability of 300–500g and 500g+ grades through late October.
7. Revised Buyer Guidance (Updated Oct 22)
- Don't rely solely on Fujian volume this week. If your spec is flexible, consider Hainan (Lingshui), Guangdong (Zhanjiang) or Guangxi (Beihai) origin as backup sources.
- Pre-book against storm risk. Lock sizes and quantities before the weather window closes, not after.
- Add lead-time cushion. Build 5–7 extra days into your shipping schedule for any Fujian-origin orders.
- Confirm post-storm quality checks. After the typhoon passes, ask suppliers for size grading, mortality checks etc. before confirming shipments.
- Watch the 1-jin(500g) band closely. That's the most liquid export size and the first to tighten when supply gets disrupted.
8. Our Sourcing Position
At Oceanseal Food, we work directly with qualified processing plants in Beihai/Zhanjiang. For each order we can support:
- Size grading
- HACCP / ISO / export health documentation
- Reefer logistics and temperature-controlled delivery
- OEM/private-label packaging for retail and foodservice
Bottom Line (Updated Oct 22)
The 2026 golden pompano market was already firm. Now, with Super Typhoon Champi pressuring Fujian supply, the near-term bias is modestly bullish — especially for Fujian-origin fish and mid-size export grades.
For overseas buyers, the playbook is simple:
secure harvest slots early, diversify origin if possible, and give logistics room to breathe.
