Guangxi Local Seafood Market Update
Share
One month into the fishing season, Guangxi landings are unusually thin. Not just squid β even bycatch and small pelagics are down sharply.Β Indian Mackerel in severe short supply. π
π Global context: The lingering El NiΓ±o pattern has weakened upwelling across key Pacific & Indian Ocean grounds, pressuring small-pelagic and cephalopod yields worldwide this season β not just in China.
π Local driver: Persistent August rainfall flushed nearshore Beibu Gulf into low-salinity water. Squid (most salinity-sensitive) left first, followed by mackerel, scad and sardine β schools believed to have moved further offshore. π
π Quick Trends:
β’ Indian Mackerel: Severe shortage, prices firm & climbing ππ (well below normal catch share, globally tight)
β’ Black Squid: Minimal nearshore landings, fleet pushing offshore π
β’ Round Scad: Available but tightening π
β’ Sardine: Thin nearshore catch, shifted to normal-salinity offshore β οΈ
β’ Farmed Golden Pomfret: At their highest level since 2020 πππ (stocking cut after 2 loss-making cycles)
β’ Mixed bycatch: Noticeably below prior-year same period
With global pelagic yields pressured by El NiΓ±o, plus local Beibu Gulf salinity disruption β Indian Mackerel, squid and Golden Pomfret are tight across the board, hard to refill short-term.Β Lock specs & volumes now, especially Thailand-bound Indian mackerel programs. β‘
